freak weather event, a pandemic, or a supply chain issue for us to be without food, water, or heating. The things we take for granted can quickly be taken away.
Do you ever ask Him for these things? Do you ever thank God for daily providing food, clothing, family, friends, and health? The Bible tells us that all of these things speak to us of God’s great goodness and daily care toward us:
“He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.” (Acts 14:17)
3. God Is Our Rescuer
The Bible teaches that we cannot approach God as we are. God is perfect and good, and we know in our conscience that we are not. The memories of the wrongs we have done often replay in our quiet moments. That’s one reason why many people never pray. There is a deep (and right) sense that we are estranged from God and cannot enter His presence. We need someone who can commend us to God and give us access to Him.
A young soldier in the American Civil War had tragically lost all of his brothers and his father in battle. He desperately wanted to meet President Lincoln to ask for exemption from military service so he could care for his mother. However, he was denied access to the President’s office. As he sat dejected on a bench, a young boy asked him what was wrong.
The soldier explained his predicament, and the young boy led him by the hand through the gates, past the guards,

SPEAKING TO GOD
the Father and the Son ...
by Joe Bailey - Baptist Church
Who was the last person you spoke with? We speak to people because of our relationship with them. We speak to our husband or wife because they are our life’s companion. We speak to our children because they are our offspring. We speak to our friends because we have something in common and enjoy their company.
Something you will notice if you come along to CBC is that we speak to God. That is essentially what prayer is. But why should we speak to God? Consider three ways we relate to Him.
1. God Is Our Creator
Recently, I was chatting with a man in Derby. He asked me how I could be so sure of a Creator when I had never met Him personally. I pointed to a nearby building and asked him if he knew the building had a builder. He told me he was sure of it, as he was a builder himself. The rows of bricks, neatly aligned, required someone with skill and strength to put them together. I told him that, in the same way, we can be sure of a Designer of something infinitely more complex— from the vast order of the cosmos to the intricacy of a cell with all of its molecular machinery.
The Bible teaches that we owe our lives to God:
“The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life, and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
He gave us life and made us in His image, with the ability to relate to one another but also to know Him. We should pray to Him with thankfulness for all the good things He has made—whether a flower, a beautiful sunset, or the lives of the people around us. Have you ever thanked God for your life?
2. God Is Our Provider
Do you remember the empty shelves at various times during the COVID pandemic? We rarely stop to ponder how fragile our existence is. It only takes a
