PARKINSON’S GROUP
I was pleased to attend the annual Charity Presentation Evening of the Market Bosworth Rotary Club held at Bosworth Hall in February. On this evening about £33,000, largely collected from the Christmas Santa Sleigh, was distributed to 32 local charities. One of these cheques was presented to Hinckley Parkinson’s Chairperson, Janet Kavanagh, for the local Group.
In response Janet spoke about how grateful the charity was for such support and described how such funds were used to subsidise all activities. She spoke particularly about how one person, an 87 year old gentleman with Parkinson’s, had been supported. Malcolm had seemed to be shy and rather frail but it was discovered that with his wife, Janet, they had once much enjoyed dancing. He came along to the Friday ‘Movement and Music’ sessions where leader Liz Wong encouraged him to try a walz. As the weeks went by Malcolm regained strength in his legs and began again to get real enjoyment from his dancing.

Supporting the recent Angela Rippon UK National ‘Let’s Dance’ campaign, Liz suggested that the group [of around 25 participants] dressed up for an afternoon. Malcolm’s response was that he had a dinner jacket but never thought that he would ever wear it again. Malcolm arrived, with his wife, suitably attired, even with dancing shoes and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon!
Malcolm provides such a good example of how gentle exercise in a fun and supportive way is a wonderful treatment and his general health has shown great improvement. The message clearly is “Keep on dancing!”
Meanwhile, our regular meetings continue each month on the 2nd Sunday at 2.30 on

April 13th at the Mary Forryan Centre (LE10 1LW); ‘Get Active’ Tuesday exercises at 2.30 at the St. Francis Centre; ‘Movement to Music’ [2.15] and ‘Singing for Fun’;[4.00] at Elmesthorpe Village Hall on Friday afternoons; The Carers Group is on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the same time as the exercise class, and there’s Indoor Bowling at Barwell on the 4th Wednesday, April 23rd. It is hoped that the informal Monday ‘Drop In’ [3rd Monday each month] will be resuming at the new Gates ‘Woodlands Garden Centre’ near Stapleton. Watch for announcements.
Don’t forget that World Parkinson’s Day is coming up again on April 11th.

“Why would anyone do this?” That was the question Anupa asked herself when she experienced something quite unkind in the community. Anupa Roper has lived in Countesthorpe for nearly 20 years and after 17 years of teaching now works as Body Image Educator.
One two occasions, Anupa has gone to check on some posters she has been putting up for a new venture and on both occasions her posters have been removed and others put in their place! Anupa says “I am contacting you, The Herald, to remind people how important it is that we come together as a community, especially as soon, we are to be joined by a few more residents (but let’s not talk about that!) I want to remind everyone that it’s together that we rise. Contrary to what I experienced, I replaced drawing pins for other businesses, I made sure I didn’t cover other’s posters and if there wasn’t

room for mine I walked away. My work is all about making the world a better place and kindness is key to this”
