KING RICHARD III VISITOR
CENTRE CELEBRATES
10th ANNIVERSARY
It’s hard to believe that it’s 10 years since we opened the doors to the King Richard III Visitor Centre.
The extraordinary discovery of the king in a council car park made headlines around the world, resulting in a huge surge of interest in Richard III and in Leicester itself.
In late 2012, just weeks before the remains were confirmed to be those of the last Plantagenet king of England, I decided the city council should buy the former Alderman Newton’s school, immediately adjacent to the dig site.
By July 2014, the old school had been converted into a state-of-the-art visitor centre that told the remarkable story of the search for the lost king and revealed the grave where Richard III had lain for more than 500 years.
Ten years on the visitor centre is going from strength to strength, with staff looking forward to welcoming their 500,000th visitor this year. If you
haven’t visited yet, find out all about it at kriii.com.
