8 THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD
DECEMBER 2015
COUNTESTHORPE U3A
November’s U3A members’ meeting was very well attended as we saw slides taken by Roger Hailwood on a whistle stop holiday in China. Before and after our monthly talks various group leaders are busy in the village hall lounge, signing up members for visits to the theatre, various day trips, our Sunday solo lunches and the specific smaller gatherings that happen every day!
One of these regular groups is Country Dancing and as you can see we tried out Longsword Dancing one session – with great success it should be said though not at the fastest speed on the CD!
One new group is just starting for ten pin bowling, another will contemplate various aspects of Garden Appreciation, meeting indoors to start with then planning to go out to visit gardens as the weather improves.
More about our organisation and all that it offers can be found on the Website www. countesthorpeu3a.co.uk or look for the regular newsletters in the library or the Rainbow Shop opposite the Co-op.

Lots of people
of all ages joined
us for our Family
Arts Day in early
October and were soon very busy –as you can see from our photograph! Members also manned the Craft stall at the Spooktacular event in Bouskell Park and were very busy with lots of folk wanting to join in.
A typically wet November morning meant hard work for those delivering their wares to the Craft Market but near neighbours to the College Anne and Ian Singleton delivered their beautiful tree decorations by wheelbarrow – a fascinating sight it was but sadly my camera was not on hand to record it. The weather seemed to encourage lots of shoppers to arrive early and the College was soon buzzing as over 1000 folk shopped at the many varied stalls, chatted with friends and enjoyed the refreshments available.
On December 21st, a Monday, we will enjoy gathering at Glebe Gardens to listen together to the Radio Leicester Carol Service and sing along with folk from all across the county. The broadcast starts
at 7pm, though I advise arriving a little earlier than that to get settled!
Our first event of 2016 will be a very lively one when Ian MacMillan pays us a return visit with his incredible poetry performance, this time accompanied by composer Luke Carver Goss. This is on Friday January 21st in the village hall and tickets are available now from Glebe Garden Centre or Active Arts hotline on 0753 1440 365, through
the website www.activearts.
org.uk or by e mail on active. arts2010@gmail.com.
We of course produce an annual programme in late Summer for the year ahead, and almost always add extra events – like the Christmas Wreath Workshop in late November. We have only just received details of the ‘Upbeatles in Concert’, but can now confirm they will be in the village hall on Friday 29th April at 7.30pm. I will be reminding you about this in the New Year but fans of this local Tribute Band featuring Tony Wadsworth from Radio Leicester will want to get the date in their diaries I am sure.
